Eyebrow Tattoo Aftercare: The Complete Guide

You’ve just booked your eyebrow tattoo appointment. Exciting. But here’s the thing: the procedure is only half the battle. What you do in the days and weeks after matters just as much for how your brows look and last.

This guide covers everything you need to know about aftercare. Follow it properly and you’ll get flawless, long-lasting results. Skip the steps and you might end up with faded or patchy brows. So let’s get into it.

The First 7 Days: This Is Critical

The old “keep dry for 7 days” advice came from microblading, where cuts in the skin need to seal. Nano machine hairstrokes don’t cut the skin. The needle deposits pigment into the upper dermis with tiny punctures that close within hours, not days. Keeping the area bone dry for days actually causes the skin to over-dry, tighten, and crack — which pulls pigment out with it.

Days 1–3: Gentle & Simple

Your brows have been through a precise process — tiny punctures that close within hours, not days. The goal now is to let them settle without interference.

What to do:

  • For the first 3–4 hours, keep your brows dry while the skin closes.
  • After that, when washing your face, give your brows a quick, gentle splash of water — don’t rub or soak, just let water pass over them naturally.
  • Pat (don’t wipe) the rest of your face dry, and let your brows air dry.
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase — on your back if you can.

What to avoid:

  • No swimming, saunas, steam rooms, or heavy sweating.
  • No facials, chemical peels, or active ingredients (retinol, AHA/BHA) near the brow area.
  • No makeup directly on the brows — you can apply makeup around them as normal.
  • No touching, picking, or scratching — let any flaking happen on its own.

After Day 3: Back to Normal (Almost)

By day 3, you may notice some minimal flaking, this is normal for nano hairstrokes. It’s nothing like the heavy scabbing you might have heard about with microblading. Your skin is simply shedding the very top layer.

What to do:

  • Resume your normal face washing and skincare routine as usual.
  • Your brows can get wet normally now — just avoid soaking or rubbing directly on them.
  • Let any flaking fall off on its own. Don’t pick or peel.
  • Let your brows air dry after washing.

What to avoid:

  • No swimming or activities that cause heavy sweating for a little longer — prolonged moisture and chlorine can affect how pigment settles.
  • No makeup directly on the brows until flaking has fully finished.
  • No picking, scratching, or rubbing the brow area.

Days 3–7: Flaking Fades

Any flaking will be minimal and will gradually disappear on its own — this is nothing like the heavy scabbing associated with microblading. By day 5–7, your skin will be nearly clear.

What to do:

  • Continue your normal skincare and face washing routine.
  • From around day 5–7, once flaking has mostly settled, you can give your brows a gentle scrub to help clear any remaining flakes.
  • By day 7, you’re in the clear — swimming, exercise, and sweating are all fine again.

After Day 7: Healed & Settling

By now, flaking is gone and your brows will look noticeably lighter than when they were first done — this is completely normal. Depending on your skin texture, some areas may look slightly patchy or uneven. This is just the pigment settling into your skin and will continue to develop over the next few weeks.

What to do:

  • Resume your full skincare routine as normal — actives, exfoliants, everything.
  • Swim, exercise, sweat — no restrictions.
  • Simply enjoy your brows and let them settle.

There’s nothing else you need to avoid at this stage. Your touch-up appointment (usually at 4-6 weeks) is where we perfect any patches and adjust the colour.

Weeks 3–6: Colour Settling

Your brows are fully healed and there’s nothing you need to avoid at this stage. The colour may still look lighter or slightly uneven, this is normal and expected. Pigment continues to settle and develop in the skin over the coming weeks.

Your touch-up appointment at 4-6 weeks is where we refine any patchy spots and perfect the final result.

Products: What to Use and What to Avoid

Use:

  • Your normal skincare and cleansers as usual after day 3.
  • SPF 50+ over your brows when you’re spending extended time in the sun (beach days, outdoor activities).

Avoid directly on the brows (anytime):

  • Skin-lightening products containing hydroquinone — these can fade pigment over time.
  • Retinol or retinoids used directly on the brow area long-term will break down pigment faster.

That’s it. Everything else is fine.

Quick Reference: Do’s & Don’ts

Common Issues and Solutions

Common Questions

My brows look too light — did something go wrong?

No, this is completely normal. After the flaking settles, brows will look much lighter than they did straight after the appointment. The colour continues to develop and deepen over the next few weeks. By your touch-up at 4-6 weeks you’ll see the true final result. This happens with everyone.

There’s some redness after my appointment — is that normal?

Yes. Mild redness for the first 24–48 hours is expected. If it persists beyond 48 hours or gets worse, contact us at M Brows & Beauty.

My brows feel a little itchy — is that normal?

You’ll usually feel minimal to no itching with nano hairstrokes, but if you do notice some, it’s a normal part of healing. Try to leave them alone and let it pass — scratching can disturb the pigment and the healing skin.

I got my brows wet in the first few hours. Are they ruined?

No. A little accidental moisture in the first 3–4 hours isn’t ideal but won’t ruin your result. Just gently pat them dry and carry on as normal.

Is flaking normal — and should I help it along?

You’ll usually see minimal to no flaking with nano hairstrokes. If you do notice some light flaking, that’s normal — just let it fall off on its own. Picking or peeling can pull pigment out with it.

One brow looks darker than the other.

Different areas heal at slightly different rates, so this is usually just the healing process playing out. By your touch-up appointment any imbalance can be corrected.

Some spots look patchy.

Patchiness during healing is normal, especially if you have oilier or textured skin. Most of it fills in as the skin settles. Anything remaining gets touched up at your 6–8 week appointment.

I’m getting a reaction or rash.

Stop using all products and contact M Brows & Beauty straight away. Reactions are rare but we want to hear from you immediately.

Your Touch-Up Appointment: What to Know

Approximately 4–6 weeks after your procedure, you’ll return for your touch-up appointment. This is a refining session designed to perfect your results once the area has fully healed.

What happens during your touch-up?

  • We assess how your brows have healed and settled.
  • We reinforce any areas where pigment has healed lighter than expected.
  • We make any minor adjustments to colour, density, or shape if needed.
  • We ensure your final result is balanced, polished, and tailored to you.

Touch-Up Fee

Your 4–6 week touch-up fee is $150 (unless otherwise stated on your booking confirmation or receipt).

This appointment is an important part of the cosmetic tattoo process. Healing varies from person to person, and some areas may heal lighter than others. The touch-up allows us to perfect the colour, shape, and overall result once your skin has completed its initial healing phase.

For the best outcome, we strongly recommend attending your scheduled touch-up appointment.

Long-Term Care: Making Them Last

Your brows are fully healed after 3-4 weeks, but like all cosmetic tattooing they’ll fade gradually over time — that’s the nature of semi-permanent work.

To make them last as long as possible:

  • Apply SPF 50+ over your brows when spending extended time in the sun — sun exposure is the biggest cause of fading.
  • Avoid retinol or acids directly on the brow area long-term, as these break pigment down faster.
  • Keep your skin healthy and hydrated.
  • Come back for a colour refresh every 12–24 months to keep them looking their best.

How long your brows last varies from person to person. Skin type, lifestyle, and sun exposure all play a part. Oilier skin tends to fade a little faster.

Frequently Asked Questions about Eyebrow Tattoo Aftercare

When can I resume normal activities?

You can return to normal daily life straight away. Hold off on swimming, heavy exercise, saunas, and excessive sweating for the first 5–7 days — after that, you’re free to get back to everything as usual.

Can I wear makeup during healing?

You can wear makeup around your brows as normal right away — just avoid applying anything directly on the brows for the first 5–7 days while the skin settles.

What if I’m going on holiday right after my appointment?

The good news is nano aftercare is simple, so a little travel isn’t a problem. Just keep your brows dry for the first few hours, be gentle with them, and avoid swimming and lots of sun exposure for the first 5–7 days. If you’re heading somewhere hot or beachy, pop some SPF 50+ over your brows once they’ve settled.

Do I really need the touch-up appointment?

Yes — the touch-up is where we perfect the final result, evening out colour and shape after your skin has healed. It’s an important part of the process, usually done at 4–6 weeks.

Do I need to use special skincare products while healing?

No — nano aftercare is refreshingly simple. There’s no special ointment needed. Just keep your brows dry for the first few hours, then return to your normal gentle skincare routine after day 3, avoiding applying anything directly on the brows for the first 5–7 days.

How long before I can see the final result?

The true final result settles around 4–6 weeks, after your touch-up appointment. Straight after your appointment the brows look darker, then they lighten as they heal — this is all normal. By the 4–6 week mark you’ll see what your brows actually look like.

Will my brows itch a lot?

You’ll usually feel minimal to no itching with nano hairstrokes. If you do notice a little, it’s a normal part of healing — just try not to scratch, as that can disturb the pigment and the healing skin.

What should I tell my aesthetician or dermatologist?

Let them know you’ve just had a cosmetic tattoo. Ask them to avoid using active ingredients (retinol, acids) directly on your brows long-term, and to work around the treated area while it’s healing.

Can I get a facial during healing?

Best to wait until your brows have settled — around 5–7 days. After that you’re free to resume facials and professional treatments as normal, just ask them to be gentle around the brow area.
